During British rule, there was an Indian couple who were as fair skinned as the Britishers. Indians have a broad spectrum of skin complexion and light skin complexion is not uncommon.
This couple, Harish Chnadra and Maya Devi, did something unusual. They stopped any interaction with their own Indian family/community. They started pretending that they were Britishers. They changed their names, now Harry and Maria, picked up British accent and dressed like Britishers. They trained their son the same. They sat in the Carriage where only Britishers were allowed, while other Indians were whipped when asked why they can't get the same seating even though they pay the same price. They soon started mingling with the British community.
Harry one day paid visit to his cousin brother, Ramchandra, who was as fair skinned as Harry and so was his wife. Harry tried to convince him of the benefits of doing what they were doing. Ramchandra was beyond amazed. Harry even suggested that Ramchandra let his childless brother adopt his son, since he was dark skinned.
Ramchandra had just come back after being in the jail for 14 days for protesting against British Rule. Leaving his wife and young child at home. His wife did not mind, she herself had been carrying their son and attending marchs lead by women for a free India. They often struggled for food whenever Ramchandra went to jail, it was a struggle they proudly accepted.
Whenever Ramchandra put on shirt, pant the Hawaldars would stand and salute him, assuming him to be a Britisher. Ramchandra could have easily fooled others of being a Britisher. But he chose otherwise. He continued to be who he was, and proudly so, he'd gladly take whips in the name of a free India if he had to. His cousin Harry on the other hand, disappeared after India's independence. Assumed to have left India along with the Britishers.
In our times today, however, some people would hail Harry as a hero, for being such forward looking. For being able to settle out of India so early on, for being 'practical'. Because in our times today, loyalty only means being loyal to your chosen soccer/sports team. You don't think about your country, your community or even your family. You only think about yourself and your children.
To such people, I say 'fuck you'.
Ramchadra is my grandfather, Ramchandra Paliwal, and like him and I am a proud Indian.
